The chipped mug warmed Amelia's hands, but it did little to chase away the chill that had settled deep inside her bones. Another day, another stack of invoices threatening to topple over. Sighing, she finally reached for the mail, a task she usually postponed until the absolute last minute. Bills, mostly. Junk. Then, a thick envelope, handwritten. Strange. It bore a postmark from her hometown, a place she hadn’t thought about in years. Her stomach clenched. Inside, a letter penned in a familiar, shaky hand. The words, when she finally deciphered them, hit like a physical blow, dragging her back to a time she’d tried so desperately to forget.
